Vile Parle murder accused may be tried in fast-track court

The Vile Parle police, which is probing the alleged rape and murder of a 24-year-old physiotherapist, is likely to appeal to the state government, demanding that the case be tried in a fast-track court.

Police will also demand for the death penalty for the arrested accused, 27-year-old Devashish Dhar. The accused, during interrogation, said that the murder was not pre-planned as he did not know the victim personally. Dhar was arrested from Midnapur district of West Bengal on Monday.

"He (Dhar) said neither of them knew each other. While the accused may not have confessed to the crime, we are confident that he is the man. The medical reports will provide clarity on the matter," said Mahadev Nimbalkar, Police Inspector (Crime) and investigating officer of Vile Parle Police Station. According to police sources, the investigators have in their possession medical and technical pieces of evidence to corner Dhar. The source also said that medical reports can be used as evidence against the accused.

He was also caught on the CCTV footage around 1 am on December 6 while going towards the victim's house and returning after 25 minutes. The police then questioned locals from the area and obtained details of his hometown. Meanwhile, the parents of the victim are demanding that the case be tried in a fast-track court. The father of the deceased said:

"Dhar would live in the home behind our residence. He worked in a jewellery shop that my wife would frequent. After getting a better look at him through pictures, we are sure it is him. I have a feeling that he followed my daughter and her friends when they had gone to withdraw money from the ATM. Why did he kill my daughter?," said the deceased's father.

The accused will be produced in a local court on Friday.
