Sandeep Yeole, an RTI activist from Vikhroli, in suburban Mumbai has alleged that he was paid a bribe by a real estate company called Omkar Realtors so that he doesn't pursue the alleged scam in Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme in Vikhroli. The activist brought a bundle of fresh notes and presented it in front of the media on Wesdnesday claiming it was Rs 40 lakh in cash. However, the builder denied the allegations and said that the money was given as advance rent for 88 slum dwellers.

The activist claims that he has been pursuing the matter for quite a long time and has gathered all information regarding the SRA scheme. The activist has alleged that there's a scam in the Parksite SRA project being carried out by the developer.

He said, "The builder, in order to prevent me from pursuing the scam bribed me, and I have got the cash he gave me. I was given a bribe of Rs 1 crore, of which we have spent Rs 60 lakh in order to expose the scam and have  proof for the same. Today I had got Rs 40 lakh to show to the public  how builders manage everything."

Meanwhile, Omkar Realtors however denied paying any money as bribe.

They said in an email: “Omkar Realtors would like to emphatically state that an amount of Rs 40 lakhs was paid to Mr Sandeep Yeole, a local activist, in regard to the redevelopment project at Parksite, Vikhroli as advance rental disbursal amount for 88 slum tenants. In SRA projects, a small fraction of slum tenants are paid out their rental advances in cash whereby (sic) they don’t have bank accounts.”

The email went on to say: “The said amount, which is completely accounted for, was paid as advance rents for 88 slum tenants who planned to shift immediately during the monsoon. Mr Yeole had been opposing and misleading some of the constituents on the false prospect of the project being redeveloped under Self Redevelopment. The defamatory attempt by Mr Yeole to present completely twisted facts to the media is purely a matter of pressure tactic (sic) for ulterior motives and his failure to influence the overall slum community from going in for Self Redevelopment.”
