While commuters were evacuated on Thursday after a door of one of the Versova-Ghatkopar Metro-1 coaches did not close properly, data accessed by DNA reveals that this was not the first such incident on Mumbai Metro. There have been at least 13 such incidents of faults in door opening or closing of Metro-1 between 2016 and 2017.

According to the monthly reports of Independent Engineer for Metro-1, between January 2016 and June 2016, four incidents of fault in the door were reported. Between July 2016 and December 2016, there were two incidents of fault in the door of Metro train reported.

All these problems were related to the door wherein the doors were either not opening or not closing while on halt at Metro station. Further, in case of January 2017 to June 2017, there were two incidents reported followed by five incidents between July 2017 and December 2017.

On Thursday afternoon, Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) that operates the Metro-1 corridor had said that the door of a Versova-bound Metro did not close properly at Western Express Highway (WEH) Metro station following which commuters were evacuated from the Metro.

Meanwhile, an MMOPL spokesperson, said, "Regular announcements are made inside the metro train advising commuters to stay away from doors and not lean on them to avoid obstructions."

MMOPL added, "The incident of non-closure of the door was caused by obstruction at the door due to which the door came out of the alignment. Following the standard protocol of safety wherein the train is not allowed to run while doors are open, the commuters were evacuated and sent by the next service."

Other than this, the coaches of Metro-1 that were procured from China have experienced several other technical faults like a fault in the battery cells, headlights or train not catching average speed for transit. DNA had reported in February 2018, as to how the failures in rolling stock (coaches) of Metro-1 increased from 24 in 2016 to 35 in 2017.

The Metro-1 corridor was made operational in 2014 and has 12 stations between Versova and Ghatkopar with an average weekday daily ridership being 3.50 lakh.
