The Versova police are on the lookout for an unknown man who allegedly created a bogus e-mail ID, did online transfer of money and duped a businessman to the tune of Rs16 lakh. The Versova police are taking help of cyber crime officers in the case.

According to the police, the complainant resides in Panjtag Heights building at Yari Road in Versova with his family and has a chemical business. He regularly visits South Africa and Dubai for work and stays there for months. He does most of his business transactions online, including taking orders and making payments for the consignment.

Sometime ago the victim had received an e-mail which said to make payment of $29,600 (Rs16 lakh) and deposit the money in a bank account, number of which was given in the e-mail. "Assuming that the e-mail was sent by one of the companies he was dealing with, the unsuspecting victim deposited the money. Later, he learnt that the company never received the payment. On closely monitoring, he found out that the e-mail had been sent from an address that was similar to the company's," said an officer from Versova police station.

The victim then lodged a complaint with the Versova police on July 17. The police have registered a case under sections 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of Information Technology Act.

The police suspect there is a gang of cyber criminals instrumental in duping businessmen across the city using this modus operandi. "There have been several such cases in the city in the past few months. We are taking the help of cyber crime police to help us trace the accused in this case," the officer said.
