An accused in a vehicle theft case gave policemen the slip when he was being taken to Madhya Pradesh from Dahisar in train. The accused, Bhagilal Meena, 22, who was accompanied by two constables attached with the Dahisar police station, managed to jump off the train.

Meena had stolen a sedan from Dahisar east about eight months ago. After he was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh police in another theft case, he was brought to Mumbai for questioning in the vehicle theft case.

An officer said, "We conducted inquiries once he was brought in and recovered the stolen Verna. Two of our constables were taking him back to MP on Wednesday." The accused was handcuffed but, during the journey, managed to free himself. When the train slowed down as it approached Vadodara junction, Meena jumped and escaped, said the police.

The Dahisar police said the constables conducted a search near the station but were unable to find him. They have informed their Madhya Pradesh counterparts.

"We will conduct an inquiry and question the two constables. We have registered an offence in this regard," said Punjabrao Ugale, DCP of Zone XII.
