While people are eagerly waiting for the monsoon to arrive, escalating prices of essential commodities, particularly vegetables, are burning a big hole into the common man’s pocket.

According to the citizens, it is getting difficult by the day to purchase vegetables at the high rates they are sold at in the retail markets.

While green chilli, which is one of the main ingredients a must in the kitchen, is available at Rs100 per kg in the retail market, ginger is sold at as high as Rs200 per kg.

A vegetable vendor from sector 9 market in Vashi said, “Not a single vegetable is available for less than Rs10-15 per 250 grams. We know that the rates are getting dearer, but we are helpless as we ourselves are purchasing the stock from wholesale market at high rates. For example, green chilli cost Rs300 for 10 kg some 15 days ago. But the same is now available between Rs300 and Rs360 per 10 kg. Similarly, ginger was sold between Rs1,200 and Rs1,450 per 10 kg in the wholesale market.”

Another vendor said that even tomatoes, which are usually cheaper during this time of the year, are selling at Rs50 per kg, while cauliflower is priced at Rs20 per 250 grams.

In the wholesale market, tomatoes are available between Rs150 and Rs300 per 10 kg.

Traders cite scanty rainfall and inadequate supply in the wholesale market as the main reasons behind the escalating prices, due to which the consumers, who are the end users, are having to suffer.

“As on Friday, only 76 trucks and 355 tempos carrying vegetables, mainly from Nashik, have entered the market, leading to a paucity in supply,” a wholesale trader said.

In the wholesale market, beans, which were available for Rs600 per 10 kg a fortnight ago, have reduced marginally and are now available for Rs500 per 10 kg. Similarly, rates of gavar and cauliflower hover between Rs160 and Rs300 per 10 kg.
