Days after a teacher from a Vasai school was accused of polishing children's lunch boxes, a group of parents have levelled more serious allegations against the institute and filed a police complaint. The parents claim that the school authorities meted out harsh punishment to their wards for reporting the matter in the first place.

The principal of Carmelite Convent English High School refused to comment on the accusations that some children were grilled and beaten up for complaining against teacher Vinita D'souza, who apparently would behave like the ever-hungry teacher in Stanley Ka Dabba.

dna had reported on Sunday that apart from allegedly eating students' food, Vinita would also give strict punishment to the children. For even a minor indiscipline, she would force the kids to write sentences like 'I won't misbehave on ground' 500 times in the notebook, the parents had alleged.

"The teachers called my son to the office on Monday and interrogated him as if he had committed a severe crime. The kids were then beaten up and warned against speaking about it," said Sherry Pitale, whose son Chris was once allegedly forced to sit outside the office for four hours.

In the latest showdown with the school on Tuesday, the parents said when they went to the school to question the authorities about the harsh punishment, principal Sister Mary Maud left the premises without answering them.

"The school teachers not only punished our kids, but also humiliated them. We don't send our children to get beaten up or to face such cruel acts," said Santosh Pitale, father of Chris, a class IV student.

Nelson Lobo, another parent, said the school principal lacks the acumen to handle kids. "She needs to understand that the old school tactics do not work any longer. There have been several changes in the teacher-student relationship. Punishing kids this way would make them stubborn or send them into depression due to humiliations."

Sister Mary Maud didn't reply to questions from dna. "I will only speak to the parents concerned about the issue."

Cops book principal, 2 teachers
Following a complaint by a group of parents, including Santosh Pitale and his wife Sherry, the Vasai registered a case against Sister Maud, Vinita and Sister Delphina. An officer from Vasai police station said, "We have booked them under section 504 (Intentional insult to provoke breach of trust) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code."
