A video purportedly showing Vasai legislator Hitendra Thakur abusing and threatening a rationing officer at a public meeting early this week has gone viral, drawing sharp criticism from various corners.

Where did the incident took place?
The alleged humiliation of rationing officer Suresh Bhoir took place at the office of Vasai tehsildar. Following repeated complaints of irregular supply and pilferage of ration, a meeting of government officials and people's representatives had been arranged. It was attended by by deputy collector Dadarao Datkar, tehsildar Sunil Koli, Bhoir, Vasai-Virar mayor Narayan Mankar and Thakur among others.

What were Thakur's exact words?
In the video Thakur is seen pointing his hands towards Bhoir and saying, "Tujhi aaicha gho" – your mother's husband, considered inappropriate in formal gatherings. Later, he threatens Bhoir, saying he would lock him up the whole night. Thakur then points the deputy collector, asking him to solve the problems and report to him.

What do govt officials say?
"Earlier netas used to threaten and abuse state officials off record, but this video shows that they can openly abuse their power and pressure government staffers to toe the line," said an official from Vasai tehsil, who did not wish to be named.

Is Thakur family new to controversy?
Apparently not. Thakur's son Kshitij, an MLA from Nalasopara, was involved in a brawl in Mantralaya in 2013, when he and a few other legislators allegedly assaulted a traffic sub-inspector. The cop had pulled up Kshitij for speeding on the Bandra Worli Sea Link.
