Varsities get more time to form statutory bodies

The state government on Tuesday gave an extension to all the universities to form their governing and statutory bodies like the Management Council and the Senate. The state cabinet decided to pass an ordinance in order to extended the earlier deadline of November 30 up to February 28 for forming all these bodies.

DNA had earlier reported about snail paced working of the University of Mumbai in the absence of permanent bodies which were dissolved in 2015. The varsity delayed the process of elections to these bodies as a result of which the government was forced to extend the deadline. 

"The deadline for appointing all the bodies of the state universities has been extended up to February 28, 2017 as several universities could not complete the process by the earlier deadline" stated an official statement from the government. The cabinet also decided to make changes in the schedule for accepting applications from new colleges for the upcoming year considering the suggestions that the expert committee had made with respect to the perspective plan" read the statement.

Another important decision was to allow the Vice Chancellor to use a lottery system to nominate reserved candidates from the senate to the management council.
