Prominent BJP leaders from the Gujarati, Marwari and North Indian communities have not stepped out of their respective constituencies to campaign across the city ahead of the civic elections, primarily because they have focused on their own sons or daughters, who are facing tough battles in their respective wards. In some cases, they have been completely engaged in battling the potential threat from political opponents in their own constituencies.

Prakash Mehta, the Housing Minister and Gujarati leader from Ghatkopar, is confined to Ghatkopar because his political opponent, Pravin Chheda, is the Congress party candidate. Chheda, the sitting corporator, poses a potential threat to Mehta in the next Assembly elections. "Mehta has fielded Parag Shah, the richest candidate in Mumbai, against Chhedda in Ghatkopar (ward no 132). It is not likely that Chhedda will win. Also, Mehta has been campaigning in Ghakopar after poll dates were announced. Mehta has not campaigned and held meetings with members from his community in other constituencies," said a BJP leader. Similarly, BJP MLA Raj Purohit from Colaba, who is a prominent figure in the Marwari community, has been campaigning for son Aakash Raj Purohit — the BJP candidate from ward 222.

Also, Vidhya Thakur, the BJP leader and Minister of State for Women and Child Development, has been on the campaign trail for son Deepak Thakur. The younger Thakur is a BJP candidate from Goregaon.

"We have good candidates, but we are unable to field them as dynastic politics has taken centrestage. By fielding kin of party leaders, workers are left dissatisfied. Also, these leaders cannot campaign for other candidates as they are busy campaigning for their own relatives. If we only allow kin of leaders to contest elections, we run the risk of demoralising other dedicated and qualified candidates. It could affect the party's chances of victory in the polls," said the BJP leader.
