The alleged custodial death of 24-year-old Agnelo Valdaris in the lock up of Wadala General Railway Police (GRP) has now got international attention. A number of NGOs from various other countries are flooding the Director General of Police (DGP) office with letters pressing for a fair probe and to deliver justice to the family.

The Maharashtra DGP's office has been receiving letters from various international NGO's in connection to Valdaris' death. A source stated that in the last two months, the office has received over 150 letters addressed to railway commissioner (RC) Prabhat Kumar, and DGP Sanjeev Dayal condemning the death of Valdaris and also demanding strict action.

A source in DGP's office on condition of anonymity, said, "The letters are been faxed to the official number of the DGP's office. They are written in various foreign languages and are sent from countries like Germany, Italy, Russia and Scotland." The source further added, "The crux of all the letters are similar, condemning the death of Valdaris in police custody, as well as the treatment meted to other arrested accused in the case, and demands strict action against the culprits."

Interestingly, a few days back, the Maharashtra police had received a report from Intelligence Bureau that international NGOs might be used by anti social elements to defame the state and police. A senior official from Maharashtra police believes that these letters are part of the conspiracy to malign the department and the state government. When dna tried contacting RC Prabhat Kumar, he refused to comment.

Agnelo Valdaris allegedly died after being hit by a train while trying to escape from the police custody on April 18 this year, when he was being taken for a medical check up. According to Wadala railway police, Valdaris was arrested along with three associates in connection with a chain snatching case on April 17. However, Valdaris' family alleged that he was brutally assaulted by the policemen when he was in their custody, which led to his death.
