A close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, Tariq Parveen, was picked up by the Uttar Pradesh police from the city on Monday for his alleged involvement in a 1999 criminal case in UP.

Police sources said Parveen was picked up from Sarang Street in Pydhonie by a team of UP police's anti-terrorism squad, with assistance from the Mumbai crime branch.

"A criminal offence was registered against Parveen in Hazratganj police station. The UP court had also issued a non-bailable warrant against him," said a crime branch officer. Parveen was taken to the Sewri court and his custody was given to the UP police on transit remand.

Parveen was deported to India from Dubai in 2004. The Mumbai police showed that he was involved in the alleged illegal construction of Sara-Sahara shopping complex in Crawford Market, allegedly done at Dawood Ibrahim's behest by his brother Iqbal Kaskar.

The Mumbai police slapped MCOCA charges in the case. They had also claimed that Parveen, along with fugitive Faheem Machmach, had attempted to extort money from a builder in 2004.
