Getting a driving licence through an agent, even if you are not qualified, will soon be difficult. The Mumbai Police’s traffic department recently wrote to all Regional Transport Offices RTOs), asking them to make driving tests stringent so that only those who clear all tests get a licence.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pratap Dighavkar said, “We recently wrote to RTOs, asking that driving tests be made like in the US. Applicants will have to take a battery of tests.”
He said one of the tests will involve showing 10 traffic signs on a screen in one minute.A written test will have basic questions on driving norms to be followed.
“We’ve also asked that it should be thoroughly observed whether an applicant checks and adjusts mirrors, puts on the seat belt and checks for the hand brake among other things... basics any driver must know,” said Dighavkar.
He added that if applicants fail even any one of these tests, they will have to reapply.
