Fishermen in the taluka, whose livelihood was affected by the oil spill, have now sought for Raigad guardian minister Sunil Tatkare’s intervention regarding their compensation from the state government and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

A pipeline of the ONGC developed a leak three weeks ago, causing nearly 5,000 litres of oil to spill into the sea. “We have been losing revenue on a daily basis. The oil spill has severely affected the catch and no one wants to purchase fish from us as it smells of oil,” said a fisherman. He added, “We want ONGC to pay us for the loss we incurred for no fault of ours.”

The oil leak has affected Nagaon, Pirwadi, Kegaon, Danda and Karanja villages. The waters along the 10km shore have been polluted. The Raigad district collector held a meeting to discuss the matter. He assured a delegation of fishermen that a meeting will be held soon.
