A 17-year-old girl committed suicide at her residence in Santa Cruz (East) because her family was allegedly against her love affair. She lived with her mother and sister and was found hanging by the former on Monday morning.
According to the police, she was suffering from tuberculosis and had been undergoing treatment for the last few weeks. On Monday, when her mother was upstairs, she hung herself by the ceiling fan on the ground floor of the house. No suicide not has been recovered.

About two months back, the girl, a Muslim, had eloped with a Hindu youth, and her family had filed a complaint with the Vakola police.

Sub inspector from Vakola police S Gawde said, "The family had approached us with a missing person complaint, which was later turned into kidnapping as she was a minor. We traced the two to Solapur and brought them back."

A case of kidnapping and rape was registered against the 22-year-old youth. "The girl was sent to a remand home, after which her family took her home," said Gawde. The girl was believed to be upset over the fact that her family was against her relationship. "The boy is still behind bars. Apart from this, she was also suffering from TB. All this could have led her to take the extreme step. Further investigations are on," said Gawde. The Vakola police have registered a case of accidental death.
