Assistant Commissioner of eastern suburb Ghatkopar was sent on forced leave on Thursday as he did not toe the line drawn by area corporators and his superiors in the BMC headquarters. The officer Ajaykumar Ambi, a fairly new recruit, is known for his hard-line handling of issues while adhering unwaveringly to the civic rule book.

On Thursday, at the instance of the municipal commissioner's (MC) office, Suhas Karvande, deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) of Zone VI, issued an official order asking Ambi to go on leave with immediate effect, and not to resume office until further orders.

Civic sources claimed that the officer is upright and his the approach did not go well with senior officials in the HQ who had asked him to do some work. Keeping the grudge in mind, the complaints from the corporators came handy while issuing this orders.

Ironically, Ambi had already applied for a long leave starting March 17. But since the MC office ordered the forced leave, it was conveyed to him in in the order that his leave would not be entertained or officially sanctioned.

This incident comes barely six to eight months after civic chief Sitaram Kunte asked all DMCs to train newly appointed ward-level assistant commissioners in dealing with citizens and corporators who, from several areas, had raised their voice against the new assistant commissioners for their rude conduct.

"Usually the slums before the year 2000 are protected but Ambi was demolishing such slums along with others. Even regarding civic projects, he never dealt with citizens and the politicians cordially," said Rakhi Jadhav, one of the 12 corporators from N-ward who have complained to Kunte.

"This has been going on for the past six month. Ever since he has joined, we have not been able to carry out our development work in the area. He does not cooperate in the projects. When we raise issues in ward council meeting, Ambi would easily pass the buck to his junior officers. We had raised the issue with the MC. Recently in February, there was a joint meeting in the MC's office with all 12 corporators in Ambi's presence. We had raised our issues with the commissioner," said another corporator from the area.
