Unseasonal rains lashed the temple town of Trimbakeshwar on Thursday, creating chaos in the small town which has been dug up for civil works in preparation for Kumbh Mela.

The unseasonal showers began in the afternoon and lashed the town for about two hours. The temple town which is to host the Kumbh Mela for the Shiva Akhadas and which will also witness large crowds on the Parvani (days for holy bath), is busy preparing for the mega event.

Although lagging behind schedule, works are on in full swing. Roads have been dug up for strengthening and widening. Sadhugram, where the Sadhu Mahants will stay in Trimbakeshwar, is still being constructed. On Thursday, the municipal council also took up an anti-encroachment drive to clear the very narrow roads leading towards Kushawarta and the temple. With the road dug up, encroachments removed and rains pouring down, the town appeared to be in a mess.

"As it is, the works for Kumbh Mela have been delayed. Roads are dug up and there is mud all over. In addition, the rains on Thursday have further slowed the speed of work," stated Lalita Sinde, former president of the municipal council and now activist on issues associated with the Godavari river.

Rains have been showing their presence in the district since Wednesday. The hot and humid weather of summer suddenly gave way to rains on Wednesday evening, drenching areas in tehsils of Niphad, Yeola, Deola, Satana, Manmad, Chandwad, and Dindori. Rains disrupted electric supply at many places. Trees were uprooted. Farmers said that the rains were good for vegetable farms. As most farms are now being readied for the Kharif sowing, crops were not affected.
