Ever since the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has put out a circular to impose fine for littering pets, the civic body has collected over Rs 1 lakh fine from pet owners for failing to pick up after their pets littered in public places. So far, the BMC has fined 220 pet parents across the city.

The civic body had made it mandatory for dog owners to carry a poop scooper while taking their pets for a stroll.

As per the solid waste management (SWM) department of the BMC, a total of 220 pet owners were fined for not cleaning the poop till the first week of January. "We have also collected Rs 1,10,000 lakh fine from them," said the official.

The civic administration has also put up a banner outside ward office to make people aware about registration of dogs and how poop scooping is a necessary part of dog ownership doing their bit for the environment. Despite civic body's effort, there were pet owners failed to take the responsibility of cleaning the area.

The official added that as per the BMC's cleanliness and sanitation bylaws of 2006, a pet owner has to clean his pet's poop or face a fine of Rs 500. "The law does not allow animal poop to be thrown in public dustbins," said the official.

Maximum violations were found in Bandra and Colaba area where 83 pet owners were fined. Dadar, Walkeshwar, Mahalaxmi and Nana Chowk followed close on the heels.

A senior official from the SWD said that many pet owners bring their pets out for a stroll at public places like roads, footpaths or playgrounds, allow their pets to defecate in the public place. "This is nothing but an unhealthy and unhygienic practice which not only makes the city unclean but also poses a health risk to both people and other pets," he added.
