In a bid to improve the traffic junctions, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) took help from University of New South Wales (UNSW) to create smart traffic signalling system for Thane.

Trials were undertaken at three junctions of Cadbury, Kopat and Almeda in Thane where improvised traffic signals were installed to understand the vehicular movement.

These traffic signals can change lights depending on the vehicles present on road. The new system mainly involved having sensors that would be connected to the signals as well. It will help deal with randomness in the traffic density pattern throughout the day. These signals are programmed to be manipulated with the varying traffic density, which can help reduce the problem of traffic congestion significantly. If at that junction, the number of vehicles is more, additional time shall be allotted for the vehicles.

"We tested the smart traffic signalling system at these three junctions for one week each. Banners displaying the message 'signal testing is in progress, drive cautiously' were put up at all approaches of the intersection," said Vinayak Dixit, Associate Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW.

As per the study, it has been observed that there was a reduction in delays with an average of 4-6 seconds per vehicle at these three junctions. Moreover, queues at signals also came down by 30-35 per cent which resulted in faster movement of vehicles and increasing its volumes by 8-10 per cent.

"For now, Cadbury junction will adopt this smart traffic signalling system. It shall be expanded to other junctions depending on its success," said a TMC official.
