Paper setters at the University of Mumbai (MU) have recently been asked to submit answer keys of all the papers conducted by the university in the first half of 2017. Several teachers across faculties have been issued a letter to this effect by the MU Vice Chancellor (VC) Sanjay Deshmukh on Wednesday.

"I am given to understand that till date no individual chairperson/ paper setter has submitted answer keys to each of the question papers set by him/her in the past or during the current process of examination" states the letter.

The letter further goes on to cite a provision under the Maharashtra Public Universities Act, 2016 which 'makes it obligatory for every teacher and non-teaching employee affiliated to the university to render necessary assistance and service in respect examinations of the university and evaluation of students as prescribed by the statutes". The clause also mentions that the VC has a right to use his special power to take appropriate action against those employees that do not comply which may include penalties like suspension of approval to the appointment of the teacher.

It states that the submission of answer keys would help ease the process of on-screen evaluation which the university is about to start this year. Teachers, however, said the norm is extremely problematic for humanities subjects like literature wherein answers are subjective and there cannot be a set answer key. "How can there be a model answer for interpretative questions? This system is completely flawed and needs rethinking. " said a senior faculty member on the condition of anonymity.

Another faculty member said, "all teachers who evaluate papers have a substantial work experience and do not need any 'model answers' for the subject of their specialisation".

Despite several calls, MU VC Sanjay Deshmukh could not be reached for comment.

FUTURE BOON?

  • As per the letter, paper setters have to submit a soft and hard copy of the papers before April 22.

  • University of Mumbai plans to evaluate close to 19 lakh answer sheets on-screen starting this year.
