The State Commission for Women has now taken cognizance of the sexual harassment cases at the University of Mumbai. One of the victims wrote to the commission's chief Dr Vijaya Rahatkar seeking justice. The commission will now write a letter to the varsity for initiating a procedure of action recommended by the varsity's Women and Development Cell (WDC).

Dr Rahatkar said, "We will write to the University of Mumbai for initiating action against the professor. We will also seek information on the other cases of sexual harassment pending with the varsity."

DNA had reported about two cases of sexual harassment in which Dr Harries Muthurajan, a former associate professor for the Department of Nanocenter and Nanotechnology and Dr Mahendra Bhaware, associate professor for the department of Marathi were found guilty by the university's WDC.

A First Information Report was registered by the BKC police station under 354 (sexual harassment), 354(A) (Molestation), 354(B) (Assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code against Dr H Muthurajan.

"I wrote to the women's commission after the University failed to take action. We had also tried to meet the Vice Chancellor several times," said the victim. "Almost a year has passed since the varsity's WDC found the professor guilty and recommended the university to take action against the professor by stopping his increment and promotion for five years," added the harassed student.
