University of Mumbai organises 'rocks, minerals and fossils' show

The exhibition aims to celebrate Geology and Archaeology as disciplines of study and create awareness and generate interest among students and researchers in these areas, says Karnik

Students and enthusiasts in the city can feast their eyes on an array ancient sculptures, fossils, ceramics and ancient games at a city exhibition of rocks, minerals, and archaeological antiquities. The Centre for Extra-Mural Studies, the University of Mumbai by the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies, MU has organised a mega exhibition from December 14 to 17 at the varsity's Sports Complex in Kalina.

"The exhibition aims to celebrate Geology and Archaeology as disciplines of study and create awareness and generate interest among students and researchers in these areas," said Mugdha Karnik, Director of Centre for Extra-Mural Studies.


Saripat an ancient Indian board game on display at the exhibition in University’s Sports Complex in Kalina. The exhibition is free for all and is open from 10 am to 6 pm.   


Realgar or the poisonous rock is found in various parts of China. The stone consists of arsenic and sulphur and weighs 5 to 6 kg. It has been covered with a plastic foil due to its poisonous properties.  


A herostone has three layers. The top layer has elements of nature like the sun, moon etc. The centre depicts one’s marital status. The last one, with soldiers, suggests it was made by or for a warrior.


The meteorite that fell in Shikote-Alin, Russia in 1947 is a part of the collection of MF Makki from Pune. It weighs 8 kg and is made up of 80 per cent iron and 20 per cent nickel.
