The teachers' union Shikshak Parishad has demanded that the state government allow teachers employed by it to take child care leave for 730 days. This facility is provided to central government teachers. Moreover, as per central government rules, child care leave can be taken until the teacher's child is 18 years old.

The teachers union wants this child care leave to be over and above the maternity leave that is available to all female employees including teachers.

The demand for child care leave pertains only to female teachers. As for male teachers, the Parishad, in its letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, has demanded that male teachers be granted 17 days' of paternity leave.

Anil Bornare, President of Shikshak Parishad, Mumbai region, said, "There are more then 3 lakh teachers in the state who would be deprived of child care leave of 730 days, which is given to central government teachers. On Tuesday we submitted our demand to the CM to start these facilities for our state teachers as well. We demanded that the female teachers can take leave during their child's exams or when child is unwell etc, till the child reaches 18 years of age. Moreover, we even wrote asking that male teachers should get paternity leave which is not given to teachers working in our state."

When contacted, the deputy director of school education, BD Phadtare confirmed the development and said, "It is true that there is no such rule for child care leave which female teachers can take." But he refuted the allegation that there was no paternity leave for male teachers. He said, "There is paternity leave for fathers, but for a few days."
