Surprisingly, a female jackal was rescued from a tribal hamlet inside Aarey Colony on Monday evening. The jackal, which is in extremely critical condition, is currently undergoing treatment at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).

Forest officials said there has never been a jackal sighting reported from Aarey. Therefore, they are assuming that the animal could have strayed into Aarey from SGNP.

The jackal was rescued by Omkar Rane from NGO Shree Ramanugrah Trust. "I got a phone call from Nilesh Bhanage of PAWS, informing me about this case. Since I was in Santa Cruz, I rushed to Khadakpada with my volunteers and an ambulance," said Rane, informing that he met Sanjay Pawar, a local, who had seen the jackal outside his house.

Soon Rane called up officials from the Territorial Range of Thane Forest Department, informing them about the case. After coordination with SGNP officials, the jackal was rescued and taken to Borivali. "I have never heard of jackals around Aarey Colony. This particular jackal was found with a rope tied around its neck and it had maggot-infested wounds that had made the animal virtually immovable. We had to carefully lift it and put it in the ambulance but we soon realised that it was not even aggressive," he said.

SGNP veterinary officer Dr Shailesh Pethe said, "We had received a phone call from Thane forest staff about this jackal being brought by Rane. On checking it, we found that it was severely malnourished and extremely weak with severe skin infection. Its wounds were infested by maggots."

Pethe informed that the jackal was under constant observation and that it was being given antibiotics.
