Two residents of Nalasopara (E) have surrendered before the Tulinj police in connection with the brutal murder of their brother on Sunday. The duo were unhappy with the deceased's addiction to alcohol and murdered him by tying him up with chains and nylon rope, completely plastering his face, and throwing chilly powder in his eyes.

Zameer Shaikh (29) was due to get married in June, but his brothers, 30-year-old Idris and 20-year-old Sayed permanently stifled his plans. The Tulinj police say that the duo were unhappy with Zameer's addiction to alcohol, and would often fight over this with him.

Late on Saturday night, Idris and Sayed assaulted Zameer with leather belts, tied him with nylon rope and chains, and locked him up in the hall of their house. At around 2 am, when Zameer's agonising cries for help grew louder, the brothers returned to the room, threw chilly powder in his eyes and nose, and plastered his face with masking tape.

By this time, neighbours began gathering outside the house and tried breaking open the door, but in vain. They soon left, not before alerting the cops. Seeing that the coast was clear, Idris and Sayed made an escape around 11am.

An officer with Tulinj police said: "The brothers often fought over the deceased's alcohol addiction, and decided to take the extreme step. He died due to asphyxiation, and injuries on his head are visible."

The officer added that later in the morning on Sunday, the two brothers rushed to the police station and turned themselves in. "We opened the door to find the body in the hall with the face plastered; we have conducted a post-mortem in this regard," said the officer.

Inspector Sampatrao Patil, Tulinj police said: "We have registered the case under IPC Sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intent). We have arrested the duo and will produce them before Vasai court soon."

Inspector Patil said that the three lived in the same house at Sai Manzil in Nalasopara (E) with their mother, whose role is being investigated by police.
