The girl whose charred remains were found from roadside near a dam in Dahanu's Vangaon was identified on Thursday as Kavita Kothari (27), an employment consultant from Virar. According to the police, she was killed by thee youths who had paid her for jobs but were still unemployed. Apart from the three youths, a woman has also been arrested in connection with the case.

The Vangaon police had found Kothari's charred remains near Sarkha dam in Vangaon. They then informed the Arnala Coastal police, who were already in the process of tracing the kidnappers of Kothari, a resident of MB Estate in Virar (W). Kothari worked as a team leader for Ratnam Infotech Private Limited, involved in multi-level marketing.

Reportedly, the three accused – Mohit Kumar Bhagat (26), Shiv Sharma (25) and Ramavtar Sharma (27) – had paid Kothari Rs17,000 to get involved in a multi-level marketing scheme. She became their team leader. But when the trio did not receive any benefits, they started coaxing her for money. Kothari, however, continued to dilly-dally, enraging the accused, who then kidnapped her on May 15.

"They made a ransom call to her father, demanding Rs30 lakh in cash and 3kg gold. Her father then approached the police, and we started the investigation. The kidnappers were traced through call records. The trio has confessed to the crime," said an Arnala Coastal police official.

"The accused were frustrated as they did not get a suitable job or benefits after investing Rs17,000 in the multi-level marketing. So they kidnapped the woman, killed her, stashed her body inside a suitcase, and set it ablaze using petrol," added the official.

"We have arrested four persons, including a woman, under section 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). We will produce them before the Vasai court," said Sandeep Shiwale, in-charge of the Arnala Coastal police station.
