A day after underworld don Abu Salem was shot at in Taloja jail, four security personnel of the jail were suspended for alleged negligence. Additional DG (Prisons) Meeran Borwankar visited the jail on Firday and suspended the officials, including jailer Sanjay Sable, after an initial inquiry. The three suspended constables are Chandrakant Pathare, Nitin Sawant and Gitesh Randhive.

“We found that there were serious security lapses. While Pathare was near the anda cell, Sawant and Randhive were at the main entrance when JD entered the jail from court. Therefore we have suspended all of them, including the jailer,” Borwankar said.

“Though it has not been confirmed, we are certain that JD was given a country-made firearm by his associates between the time he left for court on Thursday morning and when he returned to the jail in the evening. He met his wife and three to four more people in the court,” she said.

JD reached the jail around 7.45 pm. “He was being taken to his cell by two constables when he went towards anda cell and shot at Salem from a distance of 10 feet. However, there was a stack of cardboard between JD and Salem, which made it difficult for JD to take a straight shot and the bullet hit Salem’s right hand,” said Borwankar.

Sanjay Yenpure, DCP, Navi Mumbai, said JD, who kept changing his statement, revealed that he had been planning the attack for 4 to 5 months. “He says Manoj Lahamane, a member of Bharat Nepali gang, had given him the katta around five months ago.

An attempt to murder case has been registered in the Kharghar station. DCP (crime) Srikant Pathak said Jagtap and Lahamane belong to the same gang and had a gang rivalry with Salem. “A team has been sent to Mumbai to nab Lahamane,” said Pathak.

Additional commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai, Fateh Singh Patil said it was too early to say which gang had instructed JD to attack Salem.
