Unauthorised warehouses in Bhiwandi may be regularised because of intervention from the state government. This move will put around Rs 2,000 crore revenue in the state's treasury. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement during his speech called 'Transforming Mumbai,' given at the Mumbai Press Club on Monday evening. He was present at a ceremony in which the press club's annual photography awards were handed out.

Fadnavis said that the unauthorised godowns in Bhiwandi cannot be demolished.

He said, "If illegal godowns are shut in Bhiwandi, there will be a problem for Mumbai. The reason is that these godowns are the lifeline of the city," said the chief minister. He said that the supply chain of goods into the city will be adversely affected, resulting in problems for business houses situated in Mumbai, as well as Mumbaikars facing shortage of products.

In all, illegal warehouses collectively occupy around 660 acres of land.

The chief minister also said that on December 30, his government had provided a reservation for a 2,200-acre logistics park in Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ambernath tehsils.

Speaking about urban migration, Fadnavis said that Bhiwandi, Kalyan and parts of Navi Mumbai are being created as small urban centres that will act as buffer zones for Mumbai. "We are working on it so that we can reduce pressure on Mumbai," Fadnavis said.

In a subsequent discussion on civic issues, former bureaucrat Sanjay Ubale raised the need to have a separate mechanism to address solid waste management issues. Fadnavis said, "None of the civic bodies (in the state) have provisions for the sustainable treatment of solid waste. We need to work on it. The most basic problem is where to dump garbage. Existing dumpyards are now surrounded with residential colonies."

The state government through the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority plans to create an additional landfill site in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where five to seven civic bodies will transfer their solid waste.
