After being denied permission from his parents to study in London, a 16-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide at his home in Byculla on Tuesday night. Police say that the boy was depressed since the past few days and have lodged a case of accidental death.

As per the Nagpada police, the deceased identified as Ammar Ali Daruwala, was found hanging by a nylon rope in his bedroom at a highrise on Claire Road. Daruwala allegedly hanged himself when his parents were away on Tuesday night.

Nandkumar Mhetar, senior police inspector at Nagpada Police station said "The Daruwala family had spent several years living in Switzerland and the UK and returned to Mumbai five years ago. Ammar was a class 10 student at a school in Mazgaon, but wanted to return to London to pursue his studies because he wasn't happy in Mumbai. He was depressed due to this reason and was also undergoing counselling."

Ammar's father, Ali Daruwala had been a banker in Switzerland and the UK, and told Ammar to finish studying in Mumbai till class 12 before going abroad.

According to the police, Ammar's family never left him alone at home, but was forced to do so on Tuesday as his older sister was hospitalised with malaria. Ammar's parents and brother had gone to visit her in hospital that night.

However, after returning home within half an hour, their knocks on the house door went unanswered. After entering the house, they found Ammar's door locked. Mhetar informed, "When the parents forced their way inside Ammar's room, they found him hanging from the ceiling by a nylon rope. We were notified of the incident at 9:30 pm."

In statements given to the police, Ammar's father said that the motive behind Ammar taking such a drastic step was his unhappiness at studying in India. He also informed the police that the family does not suspect any foul play in the death. Ammar did not leave behind any suicide note.
