Udta Punjab Leak: Cops to question CBFC officials soon

According to law, whoever uploads, transmits or keeps such leaked illegal materials are all at fault

Promoters of Bollywood movie Udta Punjab have alleged in their complaint that they suspect members of the censor board behind the leak of the film online as the leaked version bears "for censor" mark, thereby indicating that the same copy was available with the censor board.

The police, however, are probing the case from all angles and would soon be questioning censor board and production house officials with regards to the leak.

Copy of Udta Punjab that will hit the screens on Friday was leaked on Wednesday. The leaked copy was available on torrent from 7am to 1pm before it caught the eyes of the promoters and then subsequently the links containing the movie were blocked. In this regards, Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Films legal team have lodged a complaint in the cyber police station on Wednesday.

An officer, requesting anonymity, said: "The legal teams of the production houses had registered a complaint where they had stated that the entire copy of the movie went viral before its release. Getting notice of the complaint the cybercrime police team immediately began the process of removing the related links which had widely leaked in the torrent sites from which the users were downloading the movie illegally."

Confirming the development, joint commissioner of police, crime, Sanjay Saxena said: "The production house officials had said that they had given copy to censor board. We would make inquiries with production house as well as the CBFC officials with regards to the leak case."

The leaked version also contains a scene that was ordered by the by the Bombay High Court to be removed from the movie.

"According to the law, whoever uploads, transmits or keeps such leaked illegal materials are all at fault. We have formed a special team who shall probe the case and highlight necessary details in this context. We believe that there is a group who is operating behind this and very soon we shall arrest them. We have registered a case against unknown accused for offences under the sections of Copyrights Act and Information Technology Act," said the officer.
