The decision of turning the Mahalaxmi Racecourse turf into a theme park for citizens — Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray's dream project — is now in the hands of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has prepared a draft policy for 'W' schedule properties in the island city that are owned by the state government but leased out to the civic body for maintenance. With the lease period of most plots expiring, the state has asked the civic administration to submit a draft policy.

However, the policy would need the CM's final endorsement. That means that even in the case of the racecourse, which is one of 134 such properties in South Mumbai, Fadnavis will take the final call. The chief minister heads the state urban development department.

Uddhav had vociferously opposed the renewal of the lease and had announced that the racecourse, which is currently accessible only to the rich, would be turned into a theme park, which would be open for all. A proposal to this effect was also tabled in the general body meeting of the BMC two years ago. The approved proposal was then sent to the state government. However, the then Congress-NCP government did not take any decision on it.

And now, it's been over a year that it has been lying with Fadnavis.

The proposal was tabled in the group leaders meeting on Tuesday and approved unanimously. The next step will be seeking approval from the general body meeting of the BMC before sending it to the urban development department of the state government.
