Ahead of the civic polls, the Shiv Sena on Monday tried to play ‘big brother’ to the BJP in the BMC, with Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray grabbing the opportunity at an official function to take a veiled dig at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his recent comments on corruption within the BMC.

After unveiling a portrait of social reformer Prabodhankar Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, Thackeray—in an indirect attack on Fadnavis who also attended the function—said, “To criticise Shiv Sena’s work, crows always seek an opportunity to caw from afar, but yield no results.”

During a recent trip to Nagpur, the Chief Minister made comments about corruption in the BMC. At a function in Kandivli on December 28, the CM said that even though the civic body has a huge budget, it is not reflected in the developmental works undertaken to better the city.

At the function on Monday, however, Thackeray also thanked the BJP and said, “With the cooperation of BJP, who worked shoulder to shoulder with us in the BMC and supported our decisions for the city’s development, we managed to achieve a lot. This will ensure that the party will be able to unfurl the saffron flag atop the BMC headquarters again in the forthcoming civic elections.”

On the issue of corruption, Thackeray said the new initiatives taken up by the BMC will only prove that no other municipal corporation in the country has “clear governance” as the BMC. “If one has any iota of doubt, he can simply go online and cross check with the documents which will be uploaded in near future”, said Uddhav.

Fadnavis, however, chose not to respond to any of the remarks by Uddhav in his speech. He instead praised the works of social reformer Prabodhankar Thackeray in his fight against social evils, superstitions and for women’s empowerment.

However, Fadnavis did say that there was gross delay in taking decisions on installing the portrait of Prabodhankar Thackeray in the corporation hall.

“I will visit the civic headquarters again in March 2017 after civic elections to congratulate the Shiv Sena Mayor. The works undertaken by the Shiv Sena to ensure the city’s development will get people voting for us in this election. I thank the BJP for supporting the Shiv Sena in the BMC,” said Uddhav.

With the model code of conduct set to come into effect soon, the BMC on Monday conducted inaugurations of five projects, in addition to unveiling the portrait.
