Nitin Cadbury and Golden Dyes flyovers on the Eastern Express Highway in Thane are in a bad shape. Monsoon will be a crucial test for these two bridges as repair work has been undertaken and authorities have been observing if the repair work is good enough or if there is need to recast the damaged portion by shutting the bridge.

"There were cracks on these flyovers of Thane, but we have repaired them; they are under observation," said Jayant Mhaiskar from Mumbai Entry Points Limited, the toll agency that is supposed to maintain bridges in and around Mumbai.

The problem was with the deck slab of the flyover. Deck slab reinforced the cement-concrete structure of the bridge on which vehicles ply. A few months ago, repairs were carried out to fix the cracks; the same is being observed on a weekly basis.

If the cracks reappear, there will be need for the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to demolish that portion of the bridge and recast it. Similar work was done on the Dindoshi flyover in May 2014 after major structural damage was reported to the deck slab. The damage had come to light in October 2013.

Just before the monsoon the cracks did not resurface, giving a breather to the authorities. But the monitoring process is still underway.

Five years ago, a similar problem had occurred on the BARC Junction flyover on Sion-Panvel Highway. But it was repaired and is now in good shape.

On May 16, dna had reported how three flyovers in Mumbai have structural defects but have been ignored by the authorities. Barring Dattapada flyover, repair work hasn't started on the remaining two bridges — Sion and King's Circle (Aurora) flyovers.
