Two teenagers fall in to drain, one dies

However, locals claimed that, "Municipal corporation officials are responsible for the accident. We have approached the BMC officials many times to look into the matter, but in vain."

One teenager lost his life after falling into a drain on Friday night. The deceased, identified as Aftab Sayyed (15), was playing with his friend Arbaz Ansari (12) when the incident happened. According to Mulund police, the duo, residents of Amar Nagar in Mulund (W), were out to enjoy rains when they did not notice an open drain and accidentally fell into it.

"The parents of the children were unaware about the incident. Only when they realised that their kids were missing, they started a search operation. Later, some locals informed them about two boys being removed from the drain, who then informed the Mulund police about the incident. The police rushed the victims to a nearby hospital. While Aftab was declared dead before admission, Arbaz is undergoing treatment," said a neighbour.

Speaking over the matter, senior inspector Rajaram Vhanmane, said, "We got the information about the incident from our control room. We visited the spot and rushed the duo to the nearest hospital with the help of locals. We have sent the body Aftab for postmortem and have registered a case of accidental death."

He added, "During our preliminary probe, it was reveled that as it was raining heavily and the duo, while playing, did not notice the open drain and accidentally fell in to the drain."

However, locals claimed that, "Municipal corporation officials are responsible for the accident. We have approached the BMC officials many times to look into the matter, but in vain."

Sudhir Naik, deputy municipal commissioner, while speaking to the dna, said, "It is very unfortunate that the one of the two teenagers lost his life while playing. But prima facie it is the case of accident not negligence."

Similar Incidents

Similar incidents were registered in Bhandup and Mulund. While in one case a woman identified as Sulechna Vasant Bhalerao (70) lost her life after accidentally falling in to an open drain in Bhandup (W) while returning after paying electricity bill. The dead body of the victim is yet to be found said police. In another case, a 20-year-old Akil Ismail Shaikh, a Mulund resident, accidentally fell in to drain while trying to save his goat. The fire brigade officials pulled the dead body of Shaikh out of the drain. The police have registered accidental death cases in both the cases.
