Two ST buses collide in Thane, 12 injured

According to sources, the incident took place at 2pm on Thursday afternoon, when a bus traveling on the Thane-Bhiwandi (MH-20-BL-0414) route, collided with another bus plying on the Thane-Shahapur (MH-14-BT-2479) route.

Twelve passengers were injured after a Thane-Bhiwandi State Transport (ST) bus collided with another bus, which was ahead of it on the Satis Bridge, near the Thane railway station.

All the injured passengers have been rushed to Thane's Civil Hospital, and some have sustained stitches.

The injured have been identified as Macchindra Sakpal (37), Ganesh Mahadolkar (40), Nimisha Wagal (18), Parth Mehta (15), Iram Ansari (18), Varun Mhaske (23), Archana Kesar (55), Ranjeet Shikare (22), Vedanti Larsale (18), Atharva More (16), Nitin Prasad (23) and Pratham Wadia (16). Three students — Parth, Atharva and Pratham — who were traveling to inquire about polytechnic college courses in Thane city, have sustained injuries on the nose, after their faces banged against the seats in the front.

According to sources, the incident took place at 2pm on Thursday afternoon, when a bus traveling on the Thane-Bhiwandi (MH-20-BL-0414) route, collided with another bus plying on the Thane-Shahapur (MH-14-BT-2479) route.

Preliminary probe has revealed that the gearbox of the Bhiwandi-bound bus was jammed, due to which the driver was unable to control the vehicle and ended up ramming it on the side of the bridge. Soon after, a trailing bus collided into it.

Officials said that at least 12 out of the 28 people, including the driver, traveling in the Thane-Shahapur bus were injured and were taken to the Thane Civil Hospital for treatment. Although, none of them sustained any serious injuries, minor fractures have been reported.

However, MSRTC official, Abhijeet Bhosale said: "12 passengers have sustained minor injuries and they have been treated at Thane Civil Hospital. Some of them have been discharged too. The injured have been compensated and the incident took place as the SATIS bridge is a narrow one."
