Two men on a bike were killed on JJ flyover late on Wednesday when the biker lost control over the two-wheeler and rammed into a four-wheeler coming from the opposite direction.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 11.30pm at the Minara Masjid point. The two deceased have been identified as Siddhesh Kadam, 23, and Nitin Pathare, 25. While Kadam was a resident of Dadar, Pathare used to live in Kalwa. Both were working in a private firm, the police said.

Officers said the two were headed toward CST from Byculla. At the said point, the biker lost control over the vehicle and rammed into a divider, resulting in the vehicle landing on the north-bound stretch of the flyover. The driver of a Honda CRV was taken by surprise and, before he could press the brake, the car rammed into the bike.

Senior inspector of Pydhonie police station Dinesh Ahir said, "The car was driving at around 80 kmph and, hence, it was too late by the time he stepped on the brake. While one of the two men died on the spot, the other was taken to JJ hospital where he died while undergoing treatment. We don't know who was driving the bike as both men are dead and the car driver was too shocked to notice."

It should be noted that the traffic police imposed a ban on two-wheelers on the JJ flyover after it was observed that most mishaps involved two-wheelers. However, the ban, which was imposed on April 1, 2010, hasn't made much of a difference as bikers can be seen zooming on the flyover, especially at night.

JJ flyover is one of the longest and most dangerous in the city. There are three sharp curves on it and many bikers continue to speed through these and, subsequently, lose control. In the past five years, at least 40 bikers have lost their lives on this flyover and over 70 have sustained injuries, sources said.
