Two notorious gangsters from Pune, who were allegedly involved in several cases such as murder, extortion, rioting, among others, have been arrested by the Kamothe police on Wednesday night.

According to the police, Gajanan Pandarinath Marane, 49, Rupesh Krishnarao Marane, 31, belong to a various infamous gang which has around 116 criminal cases against it. After a few political murders, both of them had run away to Rajasthan two years ago.

They were returning to Pune via Navi Mumbai, when they were rounded up by the Kamothe police. The police have recovered two choppers from their possession.

"The suspects belong to a gang which is involved in over 30 murders. There is one more gang led by Dinesh Dhaviar in Pune. Members of the Gajanan's gang killed around 20 people of Dinesh's gang because of their rivalry in the past couple of years," said Shriram Mullemwar, a senior police inspector from Kamothe police station.

"We have learnt that Gajanan alone has 18 serious cases registered against him in three police stations in Pune. Rupesh has eight cases against him," he added.

According to Mullemwar, the duo was also involved in a murder of an MLA's husband around two years ago.

"One of patrolling teams spotted them near the hotel on Wednesday night. When our officials sought to check their bags, they tried to flee the spot. They were then nabbed and taken to the police station," another police officer said.

The police have booked the suspects under sections 4 and 25 of the Indian Arms Act and sections 37 (1), 135 of the Mumbai Police Act. They were produced before the judicial court on Thursday afternoon and have been remanded to police custody till December 18. The Pune police will take them into their custody after that.
