According to the officers from the Cyber Crime police station, the B Com graduate registered a complaint on January 8, claiming she was duped by some unknown persons to the tune of Rs1.20 lakh over the last one month.
The Cyber Crime police station on Friday arrested two Nigerian nationals, including a woman, for allegedly duping a 22-year-old woman to the tune of Rs1.20 lakh by promising her a job in the United States (US). The accused were apprehended from Pune and have been put under arrest.
According to the officers from the Cyber Crime police station, the B Com graduate registered a complaint on January 8, claiming she was duped by some unknown persons to the tune of Rs1.20 lakh over the last one month. The complainant stated that in December last year, she received a mail on her personal email id informing her that she has been offered a job in a US hotel.
Later, the victim received another mail from the accused, stating that she needed to deposit money in a certain account number to process her visa and other documents related to the job offer. Over the period of one month, the accused duped the girl of Rs1.20 lakh. When there was no further development even after a month, the girl realised that she had been duped, and approached the police.
"After registering the case, we started the investigation into the case and tracked the accused to Pimplegurav in Pune. We arrested them from there," said M Rajkumar, deputy commissioner of police, Cyber Crime. He added, "In search of a job, the girl had registered herself on various portals and the accused retrieved her information from one such portal, before contacting her."
The accused have been identified as Suji Aarobee (38) and his accomplice Ester Oliver Twine (36). Both of them are citizens of Nigeria. Aarobee claimed that he came to India in 2014, while Twine informed the police that she came to India the next year.
"We seized four laptops from the duo, along with a dozen phones. We are also trying to ascertain if they have duped more people using the similar modus operandi, as we found on their laptops, details of people who have registered themselves on matrimonial sites," said Rajkumar.
Additional commissioner of police (Crime) K M M Prasanna said, "It was a very good detection by our men. We were able to identify and arrest both the accused within a month. People should be careful with such kind of frauds and should be wary of any information shared on the Internet."
