Crime branch sleuths on Friday arrested two bookies for allegedly accepting bets through an illegal betting website on an IPL 7 match. The total number of arrests in the case has now reached nine.
The arrested bookies were identified as Bhayander resident Pravinkumar Parekh alias Pravin Bhanushali and Brijesh Modi alias Bali, a Malad resident.
According to an officer from the property cell, the sleuths had received a tip-off that some bookies were accepting bets through illegal websites following which they raided a flat in a residential building in Kandivli on June 1.
Three bookies were earlier arrested on charges of accepting online bets through three websites including www.vbet24.com. The police later also arrested Ekansh Jain and Jitendra Tanna for their alleged involvement in the racket.
"Investigations had revealed that Tanna owned vbet24 website and had given some money to Jain to get the website prepared. On this website, Parekh and Modi had opened an account by the name 'Dollar 100' and were doing online betting through that account," said a crime branch officer, requesting anonymity.
