The Navy Day celebrations this year have commenced early in Mumbai with a series of activities starting from Sunday.

The Indian Navy celebrates Navy Day every year on December 4 after it successfully executed Operation Trident wherein it attacked Pakistan Naval Headquarters in Karachi during the 1971 war.

"These activities provide an opportunity to local populace to have a closer interaction with the navy. The celebrations are being spread out over two months to ensure that more events are covered in weekends when people are free to witness them," said a naval spokesperson.

The events started with band public performance at Joggers' Park in Bandra on Sunday. There will be more such performances during evening hours on October 10, 11 and 17 at Hanging Garden, in Marine Drive and in Powai, respectively. "A similar performance will also be held between St Xavier's Collage and Dhobi Talao on November 23," the spokesperson added.

Registrations have also commenced (on www.navydayopenseaswimming.gov.in) to participate in the 6-km open sea swimming competition to be held on November 17. The participants in this competition will start from Pilot Bunder, Colaba. This open-sea race has six categories – men, women, boys under 16, girls under 16, special category and veterans above 50.

"As a glittering finale to the activities, the Beating Retreat and Tattoo Ceremony will be on display at the Gateway of India from December 2-4," said a naval officer.
