In an incident that has raised concerns over security of tourists inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) at Borivali, two locals living inside the park have been arrested for looting a tourist.

The incident occurred on July 30 when four men accosted Suresh Gaikwad who was inside the tourism zone, and mugged him. They took away the Rs 650 the tourist was carrying and fled from the scene.

As per officials from Kasturba Marg police station, the victim came to the police station on July 31, as he was scared. "We registered an FIR and arrested two the same day. Search is on for the absconding accused. We are questioning the arrested duo to check if they or other people have been involved in similar crimes earlier," said a police official.

Senior police inspector Sanjeev Pimpale said the case could be registered as the complainant came forward. "Our staff patrols SGNP. We even have a small chowky inside the park. We have alerted the staff to carry out intensive patrolling. We are sure the arrests will send out a strong message."

He said they would urge any citizen who faces such a crime to come forward and register a complaint.
