Two high school officials held for leaking HSC accounts paper

Navi Mumbai cyber crime cell has successfully arrested two school authorities who were behind the HSC exam paper leak. Within a fortnight, the team manged to solve the rather difficult case by tracing the chain of messages on the messaging service they were sent on.

Navi Mumbai cyber crime cell has successfully arrested two school authorities who were behind the HSC exam paper leak. Within a fortnight, the team manged to solve the rather difficult case by tracing the chain of messages on the messaging service they were sent on.

Details of the paper being leaked
Authorities at the Maharashtra State Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) had filed a complaint at the Navi Mumbai cyber crime cell after the Bookkeeping and Accountancy paper was leaked on March 10. Half an hour before the exam was set to begin, the question paper was leaked through WhatsApp.

How were the culprits nabbed?
Pratibha Shendge, police sub inspector, cyber crime cell, Navi Mumbai, said that initially, it seemed difficult to solve the case, but when her team began tracing all the messages, the managed to nab the first accused.
"We found the first culprit, Asgar Ali Surpur to be a teacher of Elia Sarwat English high school in Malad. We interrogated him and found that he was asked to do this by the trustee of the school, Fukrurali Rizvi," Shendge added.
Surpur confessed that he was asked to click pictures of the question paper as soon as it arrived in the school. According to his statement to police, he sent the pictures only to students of his school. However, the images were later forwarded to pupils of other schools as well.

Will there be a retest?
SY Chandekar, secretary, MSBSHSE, (Mumbai), said that the board is awaiting complete details about the leak. "Based on the details that the police gives us, we will decide whether a retest is required. Action against these culprits will also be based on those investigations," Chandekar added.

What have the duo been booked for?
According officials from the cell, Surpur was arrested on March 20 and Rizvi five days later.
They have been booked under the Board's prevention of malpractices, as well as the Specified Examinations Act (Maharashtra) 1982, and under sections 43 D, 66 and 72 of the IT Act, 2000.
