Two involved in a robbery in Siliguri, West Bengal, were arrested by Government Railway Police (GRP) when one of them was found moving suspiciously with a bag at Charni Road station on Thursday evening. The arrests happened after an alert GRP assistant sub-inspector spotted one of them and questioned him for roaming around on the platform.

GRP officers said ASI Pandurang Walawalkar was patrolling on Charni Road station when he saw the accused, Ram Kausal Poddar, 19, waiting with a trolley bag. Walwalkar got suspicious, approached Poddar and questioned him, why he waiting and that too with such a big bag.

"Poddar told him he was waiting for a friend who had gone to drop his sister. Walwalkar, however, did not buy the story and waited near Poddar, keeping an eye on him," said DR Ravindra Singhal, GRP commissioner.

"When Poddar's friend returned, Walwalkar questioned them both about the bag's contents. When they were asked to open it, Poddar's friend ran away, but Poddar was caught and brought to the police station. Our men inspected the bag and found Rs48.75 lakh in cash beneath clothes."

His interrogation revealed that Poddar and the other accused, Anish Kumar, 22, who was later arrested from Pune, worked as helps in the house of one Sanjay Singhania, who owns a mustard oil business in Siliguri. "The money was stolen from Singhania's house on August 17 during a housewarming ceremony. The duo took advantage of the fact that their employer was busy and decamped with the cash," said Singhal.

The two had planned to settle in Mumbai with the stolen cash, fleeing to Patna first and then boarding a train to Mumbai. The Siliguri police had registered a case of theft under IPC section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master).

The accused will be handed over to the Siliguri police after completion of formalities.
