Barely hours after Ashok Sawant, a Shiv Sena leader and ex-corporator was stabbed to death on Sunday by unknown persons in Kandivali area, the Samta Nagar police have arrested two persons in connection with the case.
The accused have been identified as Ganesh Doghdande, an auto driver, and Sohail Dodiya.
According to the police, Sawant, a two-time corporator from Samta Nagar, was attacked about 200 metres from his residence as he was returning after meeting a friend.The police said around 10:45 pm near his own house, Sawant was stabbed to death by three to four persons. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
As soon as they were informed, police reached the spot and samples were collected for forensic examination. The Samta Nagar police, after registering a case, immediately began the probe and recorded statements of eyewitnesses and checked CCTV footage of the spot to get a number of the autorickshaw. Through the registration number, the police zeroed in on the auto driver.
“On taking Doghdande in custody, it revealed that Dodiya had hired the auto from him for the crime in return for money. We then traced Dodiya and arrested him. We suspect the reason for attack a financial dispute. However, the real reason would be revealed only when the main accused in the case would be arrested,” said a police officer
“We have arrested both of them for murder and conspiracy. The auto has been also seized and we are on the lookout for other accused who have been identified,” said Anil Mane, Senior police inspector of Samta Nagar police station.
