A man and his two daughters who were on their way to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport to receive his wife, who was returning from the Haj, met with a tragic accident in which the driver was killed and the girls injured. The man escaped unhurt.

The incident happened on Friday morning as they were driving from Bhiwandi towards the Mumbai-Nashik highway. According to the police, the driver of the Tata Sumo apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the rear of a trailer truck that was loaded with iron bars.

Some passersby rushed to help the family and managed to take the girls, aged 15 and 6, to a hospital nearby.

The iron bars which were overhanging the truck smashed the windscreen and pierced the driver. He died before admission to hospital.

The name of the driver was given as Mehboob Ali Mohammed Ali Shaikh, 32. The girls also suffered injuries due to the bars.

Their father, Hajimiya Khalil Shaikh, 41, was unhurt.

The police have detained the driver of the trailer and registered a case of negligence for endangering the life or personal safety of others. They said the truck did not have any caution signboard to alert vehicles following behind about the iron bars.
