The Special Cell of the Delhi Police has arrested two persons including an African National in possession of 3.5 kilograms of heroin worth Rs 15 crore in the international market. The drug was smuggled in the country from Afganistan by people who would swallow it in the form of capsules and later distributed it to several peddlers in the national Capital.

"The kingpin Roland Diby of Republic of Côte d'Ivoire and his associate Sidharth (26) have been arrested. Sidharth had supplied more than 35 kg of heroin to various peddlers last year. Diby was supplying the drug for the past eight months," said PS Kushwah, DCP, Special Cell.

According to the police, an information was received on August 31 about Sidharth, a Punjab-based drug peddler, who would be coming near the Janakpuri bus stand area. Around 3 pm, Sidharth was spotted coming from the Uttam Nagar side with a bag. He was apprehended and 3 kg heroin was recovered from him.

During his interrogation, Sidharth told the police that he has been supplying heroin in North India for the last three years. "He got into the trade after a woman peddler in Punjab introduced him to the drug trade. He initially worked with her as a carrier for a year and started out on his own post that. He revealed that he obtained the recovered consignment of heroin from Diby," said Kushwah.

Raids were conducted in various parts of the Uttam Nagar area and Diby was taken in custody on Saturday. 515 gm heroin was recovered from him. Diby came to the country in October 2017 on a tourist visa which was valid for 6 months. But he didn't return to his country even after the expiry of his visa and he started indulging in drug trafficking. He was lured by a Nigerian national residing in the same area to enter the business.

Diby received consignments from his Afghan-based Nigerian associates. He would also send consignments of heroin to other countries like Canada, South Africa, England, France via courier.

Diby informed the police that many Afghan-based Nigerians send consignments of heroin through Afghan nationals who swallowed heroin-filled capsules. In the past, a few Afghan nationals have been arrested by various law enforcing agencies. In some cases, even deaths of some carriers have occurred because of the bursting of such capsules in their stomach. But the greed of easy money pushes more such gullible people in this illegal trade.
