Two days after Thane bldg collapse, blame game begins

Since the last 25 years, Thane has been a Shiv Sena bastion and they have always been ignorant about the issues here. There is still no clarity if the building that collapsed was indeed declared dilapidated by the civic body, said Munde.

Despite a building collapse in Thakurli last week, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) failed to take appropriate measures, leading to another similar incident – this time at Naupada – on Monday.

The Thane district collector had called for a meeting of all civic corporations on Tuesday and asked them to take this matter in control. Following this, the TMC has formed a three-member enquiry committee which will probe the incident and also find out about other dilapidated buildings. Accordingly, it will submit a report to the commissioner at the earliest.

"The three-member committee will consist of additional commissioner, deputy commissioner, encroachment and deputy city engineer and town planning. They have been given the responsibility of forming this committee. Apart from this, we have also written a letter to VJTI to investigate the reason behind the collapse of Krishna Niwas building. Since it was not part of our dilapidated structures' list, we are keen to know how it collapsed," said Sandeep Malvi, deputy civic chief.

Political blame game
Nationalist Congress Party's Dhananjay Munde visited the Naupada building collapse site on Wednesday and spoke to mediapersons and relented his anguish. He blamed the Shiv Sena for being ignorant about structural audits and not making proper appeal for cluster development in Thane.

"Since the last 25 years, Thane has been a Shiv Sena bastion and they have always been ignorant about the issues here. There is still no clarity if the building that collapsed was indeed declared dilapidated by the civic body," said Munde.

"Moreover, Thane has been constantly witnessing such incidents which have claimed several lives. After I spoke to the residents, I was told that political bigwigs and civic officials are hands-in-gloves with each other and declare buildings dilapidated after arriving at a consensus," he added.

"I am sure that local politicians will be repairing their own flats using taxpayers' money. If the civic body has not declared this building [Krishna Niwas] dilapidated, then there should be a complaint against the officials. In Navi Mumbai, with the presence of the NCP in the civic body, we have managed to include such laws that these incident do not take place and time to time repairs are also done. But, the Sena is misleading Thanekars," he concluded.
