Two arrested for trying to smuggle liquor from Daman in Mumbai

With the festive season around the corner, the demand for alcohol is at an all-time high. Cashing in on this demand, bootleggers from Daman have been getting illegal and cheap liquor into the city through Western Railway trains. The state excise department recently arrested two people and seized 192 bottles of liqour worth Rs30,720.

Shambhukumar Beend and Mohammed Khan were arrested outside Nalasopara railway station.

The duo had boarded a train with all the bottles from Umbergaon in Gujarat. One of the main bootleggers, Mangal Singh, is absconding. “We have been keeping a close watch on the roadways.

Therefore, both the accused tried to smuggle liquor through the train. We have arrested them under section 65(e) of the Bombay Prohibition Act and have seized 192 bottles worth Rs30,720 and are investigating further,” said KY Sayyed, deputy SI of the excise department, Thane.
