Supply of vegetables at the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi was hit after truck operators strike entered day two. Supply of vegetables decreased by around 10 to 15 per cent less in the wholesale market on Saturday in comparison to Friday, the first day of strike.

Not much impact was seen in the retail market on Saturday. However, according to traders, the price can rise in the retail market if the strike continues further.

The APMC in Vashi receives around 550 to 600 trucks laden with vegetables everyday. However, on Saturday, the supply was around 510 trucks. "The impact could not be felt on Friday as the strike began at around 6 am and most of the trucks laden with vegetables had already arrived by early morning at 5 am," said an official from the administrative department of APMC.

But, on Saturday, the impact was felt as supply came down by around 10 to 15 percent. "With no trucks in sight, there will be a further shortage of supply increasing the retail price," said the official.

Normally, the wholesale market receives less supply on Sundays, and if strike continues, the supply will be severely affected.

Vegetables whose supply was impacted on Saturday were potato, onion, little finger, cucumber, green chili, flower among others.

Shahil Shah, a trader at APMC said that they are getting good supply of vegetables despite rainfall in many parts of the state. "This is good that despite strike, we received a good supply. But this would not continue for long; if strike continues its full impact would be felt in shortage of vegetables and surge in price," he said.

Lata Sinha, a resident of Ghatkopar said that despite all odds vegetable price in under control, which is a good thing. "However, I hope that state government will take a decision and before citizens feel its impact," she said.
