The Bandra police arrested two people after they allegedly assaulted a senior citizen and snatched her chain in Bandra (W). A third accused is on the run.

The 60-year-old woman, Mary Fernandes, was walking on St Dominic Road in Bandra (W) to her employer's home where she worked as a maid, at around 1.30 pm on Sunday. According to the police, three people in a rickshaw allegedly stopped the woman at that time, assaulted her and tore her clothes, before pushing her to the ground and running away with her chain.

Rajendra Kane, police inspector, Bandra police station said that Fernandes was seen walking alone, adding: "When they tried snatching her chain, she resisted. They then assaulted her, pushed her to the ground and tore her clothes, after which they fled with the Rs60,000 worth chain weighing 20gms."

The trio then fled in the same rickshaw. The victim alerted locals nearby, after which several people began following the vehicle and even pelted stones at them. "Realising that they are being followed, the trio abandoned the rickshaw. However, the locals, along with the police, nabbed the rickshaw driver who helped the police nab two of the accused," Kane added.

While the two were arrested immediately from a slum area near Banndra Reclamation, the third accused, who stole the chain, is on the run. The victim lives in Chimbai Village in Bandra (W).
